The Changes

I've lost 11.6 pounds in three weeks and it has not come easy. Last time I shared with you that Dr. Pepper and late night snacking were two things that needed to change and I have definitely made strides there. Not without some resistance. Around 11:00 p.m. my stomach and my head start chanting so...

I open the fridge and stare into the light for about 45 seconds
Close the door
Take two steps to the left and open the pantry door
stare... close...
Then I open the refrigerator door and stare into the light for about 45 seconds...

Ok, you get the idea... Which brings me to:

Change #3- Healthy Spaces

Shannon has always been good about not keeping unhealthy snacks around but the seemingly harmless chips and salsa or the obviously-bad-for-you plate of nachos would undoubtedly be my downfall at the end of a day... accompanied by a DP or two. Now when I start the numb, brainless search for a late night snack or something to satisfy the afternoon sweet tooth, my options are limited to a few healthier choices that we buy at the beginning of each week.

Low Fat Wheat Thins and a Laughing Cow wedge
Dark Chocolate Hershey's Kisses
Diet Dr Pepper
Lots of water
Pistachios
 Bananas

Sounds boring? It's not really. I'm loving the results and it's totally worth it to me. I take food to work and water with me most places so that I don't get hungry and make poor choices. Of course the one tool I could not do it without is my Weight Watchers Etools App with which I track every single thing that goes into my mouth. That's it for this "Change" post. Let me know what works for you!!

Bonus!

Since I started Weight Watchers I have had a few experiences that I would not have had otherwise. Here are a few:

Bonus 1- I tried a Subway sandwich with a bunch of veggies on it that I would never have tried before. I LOVED IT!

Bonus 2- At the end of the meeting this morning I heard a lady tell another lady these exact words "I've gotta do something, my skin is dryin up and I'm having trouble going poop." Wowzers! I had to walk away so she wouldn't see me tweeting it before I forgot the exact words :-)

Bonus 3- On my walk today I saw a dead snake

Who said losing weight was boring and hard?!

The Battle Within

I've known we were going to have pizza for our February staff lunch for several weeks and I was kind of looking forward to it. I like pizza. I like it uh-lot...

Except that..

as you know, last Sunday I started Weight Watchers. On Saturday I weighed in and loved the results. Saturday is also when Shannon and I eat our one meal out for the week. We had Whataburger and it was glorious. We plan it that way and its usually ok...

Except that...

the next day was Super Bowl Sunday. I did really good Sunday night compared to how I would normally have eaten. We made our homemade pizza as planned. We made our dip and ate responsibly. I was full but not miserable. I even avoided the temptation to get the dip back out while I studied until 1:30 in the morning. Huge victory there!

And so...

that brings us back to staff lunch Monday. I told myself I could just eat one or two pieces, count the points and be all good. I could be strong and exercise self control because I've done it so well in the past. I really did go back and forth on this decision. So what did I do? The suspense is killing you isn't it?

Well...

I got up Monday morning and drank my breakfast protein shake. I made a Turkey Wrap and packed Fat Free Pringles (14 for two points), a banana and pistachios along with a few Dark Chocolate Hershey's Kisses (2 for one point) and kept my routine for the day. I had some salad with a tiny bit of the Olive Garden dressing on it but passed on the bread sticks, pizza, cupcakes and Valentines candy!

It felt great! I was in the Zone and not even tempted because I had planned ahead and won the battle.

Super Bowl Feast

The Super Bowl. Unless your team happened to make it to the big game (and lets face it, they never do unless you are a Pats fan) the Super Bowl is all about two things:

Food and Commercials.

Shannon and I sat at the table this morning making the grocery list for the week, counting points and looking up labels... it's all very daunting and a very real reminder that losing weight and being healthy is hard. We started talking about the Super Bowl and as usual, I had her schedule wrong and thought she worked that night. :-) Then we started the discussion about what to eat for our Super Bowl BASH! (Mimi is coming over)

Everything we considered ordering or making that you would think of as classic game day foods were out of the question as soon as we scanned them with the New Weight Watchers scanner app or searched for them in the tracker. A few examples:

Pizza Hut Supreme Pizza-10 points per slice (Or almost half of Shannon's points for a day)
Wings- 10 points for 5 pieces
Dr Pepper- 12.0z cans are 4 points (I won't divulge how many cans I would typically drink at this sort of funtion)

Anyway, needless to say we decided to make our own food and came up with much more controllable point values. We are making our own pizza and splurging a little bit on what we refer to as "Shaw Dip" (cream cheese and salsa) and Diet Coke or Diet Dp. Very little damage done and all recordable on the points tracker.

What are you eating on Sunday?

The Changes

The big question when I begin looking and feeling better will be "How are you doing it?' Check back at least once a week and I will highlight a few of the changes I've made to reach my goal of eating and living a healthier lifestyle.

This week: EVERYTHING!

Change #1- No DP
Dr. Pepper is my best friend and my biggest enemy. I have little to no control in this area at this time and I go all or nothing so... I have to choose nothing.

Change #2- Study Snacks
Ok, so they are usually more like tv/surfing the web snacks but my late night snacking picked up considerably when I started back at school. Reading and writing until the wee hours of the morning are almost always accompanied by DP and snacks.

These will have to do for now. I'll post more changes soon!

The Stats

Every Saturday I will update my progress in "The Stats" post. Here are the numbers as of Sunday January 29, 2012:
